Communication tips

In the medical working world, effective communication and interprofessional collaboration are crucial to avoid misunderstandings and make it easier to get started. Here are some specific tips that can help you to orientate and integrate better in clinics, practices or university hospitals in Germany.

  • First impressions: During the first two weeks, actively introduce yourself by stating your name and shaking hands. This is also customary when greeting patients.
  • Spelling system: In Germany, it is helpful to spell your own name according to the German spelling alphabet in order to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Pay attention to who is talking to you: It is important to be attentive and recognize who you are talking to in order to respond appropriately.
  • Respect individual distance: Country-specific individual distance should be observed in order to respect cultural sensitivities.
  • Forms of address: The informal address of “Du” must be offered by a person higher up the hierarchical level, otherwise the formal “Sie” will remain. Among colleagues at the same level, however, the “Du” is common.
  • Dealing with Radiographers: Radiographers (Medizinische Technologen für Radiologie, MTR) should be treated with respect. Work with them often takes place at eye level and the hierarchy in this area is very flat.
  • Social interactions: Joining colleagues at breaks and lunches is much appreciated. This is a good opportunity to socialize and integrate into the group.
  • Building a network: It makes sense to actively ask colleagues to join a WhatsApp group, for example. This makes it easier to communicate and obtain tips and tricks for everyday life and shift planning.
  • Remember employee names: Try to remember the names of your employees, this shows appreciation and promotes mutual understanding.
  • Ask questions in a bundle: To avoid distracting your colleagues from their work, collect your questions and ask them in a bundle.
  • Dress code: Pay attention to the specific dress code of your department in order to appear professional and show respect.

These tips should help you to settle in more quickly and communicate effectively with your colleagues and patients. Clear and respectful communication and adherence to cultural and institutional customs are key elements for successful integration into the medical working environment in Germany.
